Issue One - Dystopia

Each month, based on our theme, we’ll pick a book and all four of us WRN? girlies will read it. In a chat room—sorry, not live—we’ll discuss the book and then post it to our web site for you to enjoy. Hopefully you’ll want to pick up the book and read it too. This month we chatted about The Maze Runner by James Dashner. It’s a freaky story about a sixteen-year-old boy who has no memory and finds himself stuck in the middle of a stone maze. He and the other boys must find a way to survive--and ultimately find a way out. You will be racing to finish this incredible book.

Michelle:  OMG, whad’ya think?
Kerry:  unbelievable, and the slang…totally fun plugging in what they might have meant to say!
Michelle:  me too...but it took a while to translate!
Michelle:  made it feel like a totally different world
Kerry:  freaky world
Michelle:  definitely
Kerry:  My fav thing... how he ended each chapter
Michelle:  i didn't notice
Kerry:  I couldn't put it down. Each chapter was a cliff hanger in itself.
Kerry:  made me keep reading
Michelle:  page turner all the way!
Kerry:  I personally <3 Minoh
Michelle:  OMG…me too. my Fav character for sure! what about how the kids arrived in the Glade?
Kerry:  Box=SCARY
Michelle:  since you mentioned scary
Michelle:  *creepy music in the background*
Michelle:  what did you think was the scariest...the boxes?
Kerry:  nah, recovering from a griever attacked sounded scary—hallucinations, yikes!
Kerry:  I can't totally picture the grievers, but that's a good thing
Michelle:  me either
Michelle:  a lot of tension while waiting for them to show
Michelle:  doors=scary
Michelle:  open or closed...I hated those doors
Kerry:  yeah and the epilogue, confused the heck out of me.
Kerry:  do ya think Wicked=good???
Michelle:  ???? maybe
Kerry:  but...why do you think the author wrote it in 3rd person?
Michelle:  i felt like it was Thomas narrating as an adult
Michelle:  but i mean telling the story much later
Kerry:  ohhh,, never thought of that.
Michelle:  i don't know if that's right but that's how it felt
Michelle:  did i just do a spoiler
Michelle:  ???
Kerry:  spoiler?
Michelle:  about thomas as an adult
Michelle:  craptastic
Michelle:  is that a spoiler?
Michelle:  you might need to edit my remark
Kerry:  no spoiler... just an opinion but let’s ink it out in case
Kerry:  What’dya think about Teresa? Not sure about her.
Kerry:  is she really good? What’s her role?
Kerry:  TBD?
Michelle:  i don't know
Michelle:  maybe a little romance
Kerry:  I'm on the fence about her.
Kerry:  not sure she's who they think she is.
Michelle:  yep
Michelle:  kerry does not like the girl
Michelle:  ahhh...siblings?
Kerry:  not that I don't like her...not sure she's good
Michelle:  i know why you're suspicious
Kerry:  or she's fake! wrote Wcked=good on purpose…to fool the boys?
Kerry:  I wonder if James Dashner ever wrote a draft of Maze Runner in 1st person
Michelle:  who do you think brought the most tension? Gally?
Kerry:  yes!!!! wacko!!!!
Michelle:  crazy
Michelle:  loopy…outa his mind!
Kerry:  would you take the serum if you got pricked?
Michelle:  no friggin way
Kerry:  bad… it tortured those who took it
Michelle:  on the serum
Kerry:  even after
Michelle:  exactly
Michelle:  i have a theory about the serum
Michelle:  it made them sick
Kerry:  yes, I think so too
Kerry:  on purpose
Michelle:  i loved the beetle bugs
Kerry:  yeah, but I’m gonna have griever nightmares tonight
Michelle:  What’dya think of Chuck?
Kerry:  awwww, I loved Chuck. Think he and Thomas are related?
Michelle:  might be
Kerry:  too coincidental for all 3—Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck?
Michelle:  probably. What job would you want if you got stuck there?
Kerry:  I think I'd be a runner just to stay fit
Kerry:  but I think I’d klunk my pants every time I saw a griever!
Michelle:  hahahaha!
Kerry:  BUT…no runnie undies for me!
Michelle:  i'd be a runner too…minus the undies of course
Michelle:  i like to make maps
Kerry:  wonder if we would have solved the maze had we been there
Michelle:  i don't think I woulda solved it
Michelle:  i thought they needed to do something entirely dif
Kerry:  I'm a puzzle kinda girl but the fear... KERRY:  don't know
Michelle:  i love puzzles
Michelle:  logic problems
Michelle:  bubble town -- i'm addicted
